Sustainable Holiday Shopping
by Caitlin Tkach
The holiday season is here, and with it comes the pressure to buy gifts for loved ones. While consumerism is a constant in our society, it feels particularly unavoidable during the holidays. So, I challenge us all to prioritize the environment this season by opting for consignment or second-hand gifts.
Shopping consignment reduces the demand for new products, which in turn lessens the need for manufacturing. A 2024 UK Parliament report revealed that textile production accounts for 20% of global clean water pollution and contributes 270 kg of carbon emissions per person. Additionally, in 2020, the textile industry was the third-largest cause of water and land degradation. While consignment shopping isn’t the sole solution, it is a meaningful way to reduce the environmental damage caused by the textile industry.
Fast fashion, in particular, exacerbates these issues. The industry’s low prices encourage overconsumption, while labor exploitation and unsustainable production practices harm both workers and the environment. Fast fashion relies on outsourcing to countries with relaxed labor laws, often in Asia, where production is cheap but comes at a great environmental and human cost.
Despite these troubling statistics, we, as consumers, hold significant power. By choosing to shop consignment or second-hand, we can shift away from the fast fashion model and support a circular economy. Although these statistics previously mentioned are concerned with the textile industry, any low cost high quantity goods would carry the same negative environmental externalities. Choosing to shop second hand this season not only benefits the environment but also helps local businesses thrive. The holiday season offers a perfect opportunity to change our shopping habits, ensuring we give meaningful, sustainable gifts without compromising the planet.
